Multi-Day Krakow History Tour, Including Tour of Auschwitz

The full itinerary of this escorted 4-day tour of Krakow is outlined further down the page, though we must begin with a brief note on organizing tours to Auschwitz.

Tours to Auschwitz require a small amount of advanced planning. Tours of Auschwitz are highly regulated by the Auschwitz Museum, and therefore, our terms are based on options set out by the Museum. All guides for our Auschwitz tours are licensed by the Auschwitz Museum.

Please note – The Auschwitz Museum requires that all visitors show photo identification before entry. Therefore, to book your tickets to Auschwitz, we will need the exact names of everyone in your party as they appear on the identification they will produce on entry to Auschwitz.

Failure to produce identification or names of people within the party could potentially lead to those persons not being allowed entry to Auschwitz. We hope you will understand the need for these procedures at the Auschwitz Museum and we ask for your patience so that we can ensure you and your party have the experience you hope for at this most important site of remembrance.

Please also note Auschwitz is approximately 70km from Krakow and can take up to 1.5hrs, each way, to complete the journey. We can arrange travel to Auschwitz from your Krakow hotel on the day of your tour. Ask us for details.

The Auschwitz Museum offers three levels of tour with three levels of group size:

  • 3.5-hour tour
A general tour that takes you to Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau
  • 6-hour tour
A study tour that takes you deeper into the history of the Auschwitz complex taking in sites that are not visited on the general tour. These sites include the reception centre, Kanada, and Crematoria IV, V, VI at Birkenau.
  • 8-hour Study Tour
This tour can be done in one day or split into two 4-hour tours. On the 8-hour tour, you will see everything included in the 6-hour tour, including the Judenrampe between Auschwitz I and II, where people were initially unloaded until a rail spur was added to take people directly into Birkenau for “selection”, as the creators of these nightmarish camps so coldly put it.

(If you’re looking for a shorter tour experience in Krakow, browse our WWII Day Tours in Poland.)

Join us on a walking tour of the Krakow Jewish Ghetto famously depicted in the award-winning Steven Spielberg film “Schindler’s List”. On the tour, you will visit the major sites associated with the movie that reflect the experience of the Krakow Ghetto that was established in March 1941. Beginning with a tour of the area in which the Ghetto was located, you will see sites including the memorial to the Jews of the Krakow Ghetto “Ghetto Hero’s Square”, the site where the Jewish Ghetto Council operated from – The Judenrat – and surviving remnants of the original Ghetto Wall.

We will then visit Schindler’s Enamel Factory and those who have seen the movie, will not mistake the façade of this famous building. Having saved 1,200 Jews, Schindler and his wife Emilie were awarded Righteous Among the Nations in 1993. We also visit the Pharmacy Under the Eagle a pharmacy that was allowed to operate within the Ghetto walls under its non-Jewish proprietor Tadeusz Pankiewicz who, along with his 3 female staff Irena Drozdzikowska, Aurelia Danek, & Helena Krywaniuk, provided medicine, food, and hiding places for Jews in the pharmacy. Pankiewicz was awarded Righteous Among the Nations on 10 February 1983.

We then take a short tram ride to the KL Krakow-Plaszow Concentration Camp. KL Plaszow, the camp depicted in Schindler’s List, came into operation on 28 October 1942. See also the house that Amon Goth occupied as commandant of Plaszow.

We first explore Auschwitz I which was an abandoned Polish Army barracks prior to WWII. We then take the short journey to Auschwitz II – Birkenau and walk through the iconic gate which so many Jews and victims of different kinds travelled through never to return. See the ramp where Jews were off-loaded before walking the short distance to the gas chambers and crematoria to the rear of the camp, blown up by the Germans as they hastily fled in the face of the coming onslaught of the Soviet Army.
